[438] William Mason commanded a company in Fairfax militia. From DAR lineage book #157771; also reference to #125206 which we do not have. DAR application states "Under date of June 27, 1778 is found in a manuscript of payments for Revolutionary service known as 'war 23' also in the list for 1778, the name of William Mason.

The payment of 8-11-11 is recorded to Capt. William Mason for his company of Fairfax Militia in service. Virginia State Library for Reference. Hon. H. R. McIlivane Librarian, H. Z. Eckenrode Archivist.

The information from the DAR states that William Mason was born in 1750 in Fairfax County VA and died there. Several pieces of evidence indicated that he is as documented in current data. This evidence includes the letter from Mable Elliot which has proven to be completely accurate. The evidence also includes references from his will of 12 OCT 1822 Culpeper, VA. The Registry of Overwharton Parish and other documents. Either the DAR papers are in error or the William Mason on which the DAR lineage is not the decendant of Lynn Mason.

The city of Culpeper was originally named Fairfax and incorporated in 1759.
Sometime later it was renamed Culpeper. The present city of Fairfax VA wasincorporated after the Civil War. Mystery of 7/92 probably solved.
