Death certificate shows Date of birth March 3, 1839 in Kentucky. Father is Charles Mason, born in Virginia, and mother was Mary J. Hill, also born in Virginia. Death certificate shows his occupation as farmer. Resided in Registration District No. 1331.
Taken from the book, History of Grant County, Kentucky by John B. Conrad, Editor, 1992; listed among the pensions for Confederate veterans on p. 115 is the notation, Mason, William H. b. Scott Co., KY March 3, 1839. This is our family member. No pension application number is listed.
Taken from the Kentucky Adjutant General's Report on Confederate service is the notation that William H served as a Private, mustered in Oct 23, 1861 from Owen County into Co. A, Jessee's Mounted Rifles. In conflict with information from federal archives showing Wm. H. Mason enlisted in Company H, 2nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry, CSA at Camp Boone, Tennessee on 17 August 1861, as a private. The latter may not be the same person considering we do not know his county of enlistment.
Strongly indicated but not yet proven as applying to this William H. Mason, we are interested in an affadavit signed by William H. Mason and others regarding the military service of John Hammonds, signed October 30, 1878. It indicates that W.H.M., enlisted in the CSA, was taken prisoner in 1863 and held as a POW in Camp Carney, Indiana until 1866 at which time he was "galvanized" and allowed to join the Union Army. The letter, in pertinent part, reads:
"Hiram Holbrook and WH Mason state on oath that they are now well acquainted with John Hammonds who was a private in Company C of the Sixth Regiment of United States volunteers commanded by Col Potter and was well acquainted with the said John Hammond before and at the time he entered the military service of the United States that they both knew him for at least twenty years before he went into the army. They both say that they know that when he went into the army he was a stout healthy man free from disease in either of his eyes in other words in both of his eyes. WH Mason says that he served in the same Co & Regiment with applicant and Hiram Holbrook says that he was in the 8 (3d ?) Regt & were all in the same neighborhood while in the Army and that while he was in the army he had a spell of fever and the fever fell in his eyes and that he has been vision(?) in the eyes from that time to the present and his eyes are so badly diseased so much so that he can scarcely see at all and account of his eyes he is unable to labor for his support. That the witnesses were raised within two mile of applicant and lived that near him when he went into the army and were both very intimate with applicant during all their lives and saw him constantly during all that time. WH Mason says that he knows that applicant was in Fort Carney under treatment on account of his eyes for months before he was discharged and was discharged on acct of the condition of his eyes. The witnesses say they both live in Owen County in Kentucky and that the Post office of each at Lusbys Mills in Owen County KY & that they have no interest in this applicant." Attest: Hiram Holbrook, Frank Holbrook, W.H. Mason and ?. I Robert H. Elliston, Clerk of the circuit county court a court of record of said county and in the state of Kentucky do hereby certify that WH Mason and Hiram Holbrook this day appeared before and were by me sworn to the truth of the foregoing statements and I further certify that the said witnesses are known to me to be credible and further that I have no interest in the subject matter of these affidavits. Signature and title, dated 30 Oct, 1878.
Information on the children of William H. Mason and Mary Ellen Stephenson was provided by Betty Knoll. In comparing these children to those of CHM and Sarah Ellen Glass Mason and to the descendants of Bartlett Mason, we again see use of the same names.
