Owen County was formed in 1819, made up from several counties, including Scott. Research has shown that at the time of the split, a number of members of the Glass family were living in Scott County and became Owen County residents by virtue of the formation of the new county. For this reason and for lack of a birthdate, it cannot yet be shown if Andrew Glass was one of those persons. At this time, May 1996, the researcher tends towards his being in Owen County. Time and further evidence will tell the real story.
Evidence gathered from the 1860 and 1870 census' show that Andrew J. Glass was the spouse of Nancy Miller. Living in the home in 1860 was Nancy, age 40, Charles W., age 12, Sarah E., age 9, and Jane, age 7. In the 1870 Census, Nancy has apparently passed away and Andrew is married to Susan, age 35. In the home is Charles W., age 22 and Lucinda J. (Jane), age 16. Living adjacent or on the property is Charles Mason, age 24, Sarah E. Mason, age 22, and William F (Franklin), age 4 months.
Grace Mason Zinn Couch, youngest daughter of Charles H. and Sarah E. Mason had previously identified her grandfather as C.W. Glass and not Andrew J. Glass. This note was from memory at an advanced age. We must conclude from the other evidence that her recollection was faulty. It appears that she confused Andrew J. with his son, and her uncle, C.W. Glass.
1880 census shows Andrew J. Glass, 64, enumerated with wife Susan Glass, age 44 and daughter Sally, born in KY abt. 1872 and with stepson, William Prather, age 15. Enumerated in New Columbus precinct, Owen Co., KY, page 152B.
[3252] Married by Cornelius Duvall. Owen County, KY marriages 1819-1840 by Dorothy Merrifield.
