Worked as a farmer, later a potter. Various stories exist about where the children were born; My information is based upon census information and his pension application.
I personally examined a photocopy of the enlistment document of Charles H. Mason in the Union Army dated 28 March 1865. Volunteer Mason claimed to have been born in Scott County and indicated he was 18 years old. The examining surgeon reports he has Brown eyes, light hair, florid complexion and stood 5" 6 1/2 " tall.
C.H. Mason was enlisted in Company H, fifty-third Kentucky Mounted Infantry. His Captain was James W. Read; 1st Lt. David Berry; 2nd Lt. Joseph M. Hukel; Sergeants were Harry W. Read, Hiram H. Bailey, Wm. H. Craft, Andrew Blount and David Devilin; Corporals Benjamin F. Slutton, Miller A. Bell, Shelly Goodpaster, Aaron Hall, John M. Cassady, Milton H. Smith and George W. Wilson. Farrier was John W. Garraty.
I personally examined a certified copy of the marriage license of Charles H. Mason and Sarah Ellen Glass prepared by the clerk of Owen County, Ky in support of a civil war pension claim and it indicates Charles H. Mason claimed to have been born in Owen County as were both of his parents. The original document was dated June 3, 1868. Note A.J. Glass was surety on the marriage bond. (now known to have been the bride's father and not C.W. Glass as previously believed)
In the 1880 census at page 152-B,in the New Columbus district, is Charley Mason and Sarah E. Mason with William F, age 11, George A, age 3, and A.J., age 1. George A. and A.J. are shown as being born in MO. Tom Towles reports this same family was in the area for the 1870 census.
Note his tombstone in the Deaton Cemetery says he was with Company H, 53 Ky. Mtd. Inf. The local historical society erroneously assigns him to the CSA but his enlistment in the Union Army is confirmed. The cemetery is about 3 miles out of Benton on the Old Hot Springs Highway on a small hill just before you get to the North Fork River. There is a small grocery store on the edge of the river. If you get that far, turn back toward Benton and turn the first dirt lane to the left. There is not a sign at this time (2003). The original decayed and the new one is not installed yet.
