Kentucky death record of son, Nimrod Mason at age 90 on 4/30/1860, is that he was born in Virginia of parents Louis (sic) & Agatha Mason.(page 45) Franklin County, Kentucky Deaths. The indications are that identifying the name of Agatha as his mother is an error; is known to have married Agatha Horton in 1794, divorcing her in 1813 for desertion. Additional evidence from a VA court action identifies his mother as being Mary Bethel Mason.
Our theory has been that Nimrod was tied to Stafford County and that he was kin to Bartlett Mason, also of that county, who went on to Owen County, KY. We now know that they were brothers thanks to the Virginia Circit Court Records Preservation Program. in Bowling vs Mason, recorded in 1856, collection CR-HU-H, record 472-39, extracted by Barry L. McGhee on 3/20/03, at least all extant family members are identified. From the names provided in the lawsuit we can also conclude that the Nimrod Mason and daughter Jane living in Franklin County, KY are correctly tied to the Lewis Mason of Stafford County, VA.
The following information is taken from the work of Karen Dale at KDale60909@aol.com and posted on RootsWeb.com.
Lewis' birth is recorded in Overwharton Parish records where he is named "son of John Mason." Also in Mason-Hudson-Chambers Bible (see John Mason notes for publishing data on this Bible).
Married Mary Bethel? Not in Mason-Hudson-Chambers Bible.
Children of Lewis and Mary Bethal Mason from court record, Frederickburg VA, chancery court, decree handed down 14 Mar 1856.

On list of voters in Satafford County. April; 1786--very near Dan'l Mason and Richard Mason, next to Peter Hansborough (see below) and John Browne.
Court records, Jan court in Stafford, 16 Jan. 1791:
"Ordered that it be certified to his Excellency the Governor that LEWIS MASON is a proper person to be commissioned as a Captain of the Militia of this county, that Peter Hansbrough Junr., is a proper person to be commissioned as an Ensign of the Militia; that Kenaz Ralls is a proper person to be commissioned a Lieutenant of Militia." (p. 89)
1783 personal tax rolls;
Lewis Mason is on the list of Col. Jas. Garrard: 7 "white souls" in household, 1 male over 21; 1 male 16+, 2 horses, 15 cattle. The male between 16-22 is unknown. It is not a son (the oldest of whom would have been born ca. 1778), nor is it one of his younger brothers, since both Joel and Enoch are apparently in John's household, 1783, and Henry was listed separately in his own household.
1810 Falmouth, Stafford Co. census (p. 131); Lewis mason 00101-12310-00.

This concludes the work of Karen Dale.
The 1810 census for Stafford county shows Lewis Mason in residence with one other male (child?) on the premises aged 16-26. He is over 45. Also present is a female (child?) under 10, two females 10-16, and three from 16-26. The oldest woman present, presumably his wife, is 26-45.
From the pages of the Overwharton Parish Register...A Historical Sketch...
Among these cavaliers who settled in Stafford County was Colonel George Mason (1628-1686), a native or Staffordshire, England; it was doubtless thru his influence that the county of Stafford was so named. Colonel Mason received patents for large acreages and lived on Accokeek Creek not far from Brooke. His son and heir, George Mason (16..-1716) sold "all that plantation commonly called Accakeek being the late mansion house of Colonel George Mason, deceased, but reserving "the tomb of said Colonel George Mason and the burying place in which it stands." He moved to what is now Dogue Neck in Fairfax County, then called Doags Island, and in 1704 paid quit rents on "my home seat of Doags Island" and about 8,000 acres of land in Stafford County. Like his father, the first George Mason, the son was actively engaged in supressing the indians in the upper regions of Stafford County. He was thrice married and had a large family; he was the grandfather of the Honorable George Mason (1725-1792) of Gunston Hall, author of the Bill of Rights.
